Jackson Wang doesn’t get author’s block.

From many different artists, that may be a press release that feels arduous to narrate to. From multi-hyphenate Wang — who speaks 4 languages fluently, storyboards his personal music movies, writes and produces a lot of his personal music, runs a trend model, and competed as a nationally ranked fencer previous to diving headfirst into the music world — it’s completely plausible.

Wang hails from China (“That is Jackson Wang from China” is frequent chorus for the artist), and moved to Seoul as an adolescent to coach with JYP Leisure, one of many “massive three” labels in Ok-pop. He then debuted in GOT7, a still-active seven-member group that now operates independently from JYP.

Throughout the world of Ok-pop, Wang has a popularity, particularly in america, as being one thing of an excellent equalizer. Throughout fandoms and entry factors to the subgenre, he appears to be one thing nearly everybody can agree on.

Upon listening to this evaluation throughout a dialog with Consequence, he’s pleasantly baffled, insisting that he’s by no means heard something of the kind. “Thanks to everybody, if that’s actual,” he says. “I would like individuals to maintain themselves and be somebody they’re pleased with of their trade. For me, in case you’re having a nasty day and thru my work you may be entertained and smile, I’ll be completely satisfied. I hope that individuals, whether or not they’re my followers or not my followers, take that and go fly.”

The day we’re talking, Wang is in restoration mode. He’s simply carried out at 88rising’s Head Within the Clouds Pageant, which was adopted by an afterparty he describes as an occasion populated by everybody he’s ever met. (“I really feel like if my dad and mom had been there, it might’ve been my entire world,” he says.) Even so, a day of bodily relaxation nonetheless included writing a remedy for his subsequent music video for MAGIC MAN, his sophomore solo album, which has arrived as of Friday, September ninth.

Wang’s extra hip-hop heavy 2019 solo launch, Mirrors, felt like a pure development from his roots in GOT7; with MAGIC MAN, he strikes as an artist spreading his wings. This album is splendidly dramatic and indulgent, with extra rock-tinged tracks offering an ideal automobile for his raspy vocals. Songs like “Champagne Cool” and “Come Alive” really feel akin to the fashionable, Harry Kinds-type interpretation of what a rock star may be. There are additionally poppier moments alongside extra susceptible tracks — nearer “Blue,” a track he describes as a track he cried over many occasions, takes him again to the day he left China to develop into a trainee in Seoul.
